- Australian Cricket Team: Smith Out of T20 World Cup Squad – Get the latest on star player Smith’s exclusion from the Australian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Stay updated on team news and their World Cup journey.
The Australian team for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA in June does not include former captain Steve Smith.
The 34-year-old’s exclusion follows a bad stretch of play in which he scored four and eleven against New Zealand in February.
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will captain the team, opening batsman David Warner has been picked for what may be his final international tournament, and promising batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk has also been left off.
George Bailey, the selection committee’s head, stated that “the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign.” Bailey said that there had been “long conversations” regarding Smith’s inclusion in the squad and that Fraser-McGurk, 22, who has been playing well for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, would be closely monitored. Among the 15-man squad’s experienced players are fast bowler Mitchell Starc, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, and test captain Pat Cummins. Of them, 11 played in Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning team.
Team Australia for the T20 World Cup:
The following players: Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh (captain), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, and Adam Zampa
