Raphinha and Christensen conjure slim advantage as Barcelona edge PSG

    • Raphinha and Christensen guide Barcelona to a narrow victory over PSG, securing a slender advantage in an intense encounter. Get the full match details and analysis here.

On a grasping, sometimes unhinged night at the Parc des Rulers, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona delivered a diversion that felt just like the inverse of the shared “Barça DNA” Xavi had talked around within the build-up to this quarter-final.

Never intellect control, designs, and a battle for space. This was a progressively wild diversion, building from a mannered beginning into a moment half of clearing mob-handed assaults, feather-light guarding, and chances that essentially came and went, posts clipped, shots blocked in franticness.

By the conclusion, Barcelona had done sufficient to merit their 3-2 lead heading back to the Camp Nou. Xavi talked around control a short time later and said he was “very happy” with the cautious work of his players. But no one who observed the more unbound parts of this amusement would see anything other than objectives on both sides within the moment leg. To be perfectly honest, this may have been anything.

Security around the Parc des Rulers had been beefed up some time recently as a diversion in reaction to the danger from the fearsome Islamic State. Rambles circled the sky. Intensely tooled-up police possessed the corners. Paris 2024 is still arranging a mass city-centre Olympic opening ceremony a hundred days from now. It keeps being scaled back. Anticipate a little more of that from here.

The Parc was shaking at kick-off, splashed in a long pre-match Star Wars-themed son-et-lumière appearance that included playing the Majestic Walk very well, and climaxed with the spreading out of a gigantic battle ready Yoda pennant. And why not?

Barcelona had Frenkie de Jong back from harm. PSG had Marquinhos covering at right-back once more and Marco Asensio beginning through the middle of the assault.

The domestic group set out to extend the pitch early on, wingers remaining exceptionally wide, attempting to disturb the central yellow box. But it was Barça who had the primary genuine locate of objective on 20 minutes after a few worked spells of PSG ownership. Raphinha, who had a wonderful diversion here, won a corner on the correct. Robert Lewandowski jumped over Gianluigi Donnarumma’s flailing clench hand to send a circling header towards objective, as it were for Nuno Mendes to snare the ball clear.

PSG were stodgy on the ball, continuously piping it back towards the two self-evident outlets, Kylian Mbappé, who did exceptionally well in this diversion, and the more carefree Ousmane Dembélé. Luis Enrique has been a persuasive coach for PSG. The fans adore him. The team is on a 27-game unbeaten run. Stripped of its lolling whizzes, this PSG extend has started to take after a genuine sport-style team-type protest, ornate assaulting wealth yielded for vitality and a more fundamental set of designs.

Barça looked the more supple assaulting unit, and they properly took the lead after 35 minutes with an objective made and scored by their three-man front line. Lewandowski broke an unstable challenge near midway and carried a pass out to Lamine Yamal on the right. His cross was avoided back towards Raphinha, who wrapped up delightfully, lofting the ball past the covering blue shirts into the best corner.

Luis Enrique rejigged amid the break, bringing on the jet-heeled Bradley Barcola for Asensio and moving Dembélé to a wandering No. 9 part. It worked nearly quickly, Dembélé cutting inside and lashing an exciting left-footed shot tall into the net past Marc-André ter Stegen.

Inside five minutes of the restart, the amusement had turned on its head. PSG’s moment objective was perfectly built, Fabián Ruiz playing an exquisite small deferred pass to meet Vitinha’s run through the interior cleared out channel. He slid the ball into the corner of the net

Confronted with a few supported aggressions, Barcelona’s whole protective structure had basically broken down like an over-dunked stomach related roll. while they were clinging on, tossed by the more powerful points made by Dembélé’s runs from the middle. Barcola veered in from the proper like a downhill slalom skier and saw a capable shot palmed up on to the bar.

Xavi reacted by sending on João Félix and Pedri, and just as rapidly, Barcelona were level. This was a wonderful objective, though conceived and executed beneath zero weight from the PSG midfield. Pedri had time to hang a beautiful, sensitive pass down the middle. Raphinha’s volley into the corner on the run was a marvelous, high-craft piece of wrapping up.

By this arrangement, Barcelona had Ilkay Gündogan playing up front with Lewandowski, with Félix and Pedri fair behind, and there was a hugely engaging sense of chaos within the discussion. Dembélé shimmied through on the cleared out and clipped a shot on to the post.

But with 76 minutes gone, it was 3-2 to the guests. Andreas Christensen (having as it were fair sneaked on to the pitch) headed straight in from a corner with his to begin with touch of the ball, once more left alone by any self-evident cautious consideration. Barça hung on to their lead at the passing, but as it were fair. This one has a bounty of streets cleared out to run.
