Cameron Norrie defeated Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 6-4, 6-3 to easily advance to the Barcelona Open quarterfinals.
After winning in one hour and twenty-four minutes, the top-seeded British player will go on to play Tomas Etcheverry, the 14th seed from Argentina.
It was Norrie’s 200th career tour victory.
“The score was simple, but there were many difficult points,” Norrie said to Sky Sports.
“I was pretty happy with how I carried myself during the first set of servings.
“I felt like I was moving well, and I was pleased with my footwork.”
In the meantime, Etcheverry overcame a set down to defeat American Brandon Nakashima 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to secure his place in the ATP 500 tournament’s last eight.
Alex de Minaur, the fourth-seeded Australian who on Wednesday stopped Rafael Nadal’s injury return, lost unexpectedly to Arthur Fils 7-6 6-2.
In the quarterfinals on Friday, 36th-ranked Frenchman Fils will take on Serb Dusan Lajovic, who is not ranked.
Meanwhile, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena 7-5, 6-3, and Norway’s Casper Ruud, ranked third, easily defeated Australia’s Jordan Thompson 6-1, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals, Ruud, who fell short against Tsitsipas in the Monte Carlo Masters final earlier this month, will play Italian Matteo Arnaldi, while Tsitsipas will play Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta.
