Van Dijk questions desire of team-mates after loss
- Van Dijk raises concerns over team motivation following a recent defeat, prompting questions about the collective drive within the squad.
After Liverpool suffered a devastating loss to Merseyside rivals Everton, captain Virgil van Dijk questioned his team’s will to win the Premier League.
Liverpool is now counting on mistakes from Manchester City and leaders Arsenal, who are three points ahead, in their final four games.
Their losing streak at Goodison Park now stands at three games, and their season may be coming to an end.
According to Van Dijk, “Do they really want to win the league?”
The Toffees defeated Liverpool at home for the first time in the league since October 2010 thanks to goals in either half from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
They lost the chance to tie the Gunners for the lead points, which was additional setback following their 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at home ten days prior.
“We have no chance to win the title if you play like this overall in the game and not win any challenges and give the referee an opportunity to give a free-kick away,” a caustic Van Dijk said to Sky Sports.
“I was really let down in a lot of ways. It is required of every individual to examine their own performance in the mirror and consider whether they gave it their all.
It is time to concentrate. It’s a difficult match, and we must clearly perform better against a team that is close to the relegation zone.
“If you play like today we have no chance to consider ourselves in the title race.”
