Day one of the County Championship match at Headingley saw Yorkshire crush Derbyshire thanks to an exciting and uninterrupted fourth-wicket partnership of 71 between Joe Root of England and Harry Brook of England.
At 205-3, with Yorkshire having lost the toss in this division, Root and Brook joined forces. Two matches later, they capitalised on the early efforts of in-form opener Adam Lyth (97 runs) to close on 276-3 from 59 overs.
There was no more play as rain fell shortly after 16:00 BST due to terrible light. Root was at 65, not out, and Brook was undefeated at 44.
Against a faltering Derbyshire attack, Root was accumulating in 99 balls and Brook was much more aggressive, brutal even, in 37 after four dropped catches either side of lunch, including Lyth on 22 and 80.
If Derbyshire had been able to expose Yorkshire’s star combo to a much newer ball, the outcome may have been very different. All of the catches went down behind the wicket, with three of them in the slips.
There was a hint of dispute around the first wicket to fall. Anuj Dal trapped Fin Bean lbw for eighteen, but replays revealed that fielder Pat Brown had slid into the rope in an attempt to rescue a previous boundary. Bean would not have been on strike for the ball he fell to if it had been given four.
With 15 fours in 157 balls, Lyth demonstrated his strength on both sides of the wicket. This season, he has missed three centuries in four Championship matches, but he came close when he edged Zak Chappell behind.
After edging Luis Reece’s second ball to second slip, captain Shan Masood—who scored forty runs off of 25 balls—was put in charge of his previous squad. Lyth and Root then shared 113 runs in 27 overs for the third wicket.
Masood’s innings were quite different from Root’s. The England player had only hit two fours by the time he turned forty.
Brook later displayed greater aggression than Masood. Driving with strength and accuracy, he lofted Reece for a clean six. Definitely a Bazball kind of innings.
Not that Root was without hope. After reaching a half-century with 86 balls, he reverse-swept Alex Thomson for four.
