Swiatek beats Gauff to reach Italian Open final
- Iga Swiatek defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach the Italian Open final, marking her third appearance in the championship match of this tournament.
Iga Swiatek advanced to the Italian Open final in Rome by defeating Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-3.
The world number one Swiatek swiftly overcame Gauff’s early break lead and went on to win the opening set.
In the fifth game of the second set, Swiatek broke the American’s service; however, at 4-3 up, the 22-year-old Pole faced only her second break point of the match after committing a double fault.
Swiatek won the match in one hour and forty-seven minutes after failing to take advantage of that opportunity and breaking the world number three’s serve in the following game.
Following her 7-5, 6-2 victory against American Danielle Collins, Swiatek will square off against Aryna Sabalenka in the championship match.
“In the final, I just want to play as well as I can,” said Swiatek, the 2021 and 2022 Italian Open champion.
“It is still a long way to go to win, and there is still a lot of work to do.”
The matchup with Sabalenka is a rematch of Swiatek’s thrilling victory in the Madrid Open final earlier this month.
Nicolas Jarry surprised the odds by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas, ranked seventh in the world, in the men’s draw in Rome and advancing to the semifinals.
With a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory, Chilean Jarry advanced to his first-ever ATP Masters 1000 semi-final.
After Tommy Paul of the United States defeated Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, he will play Paul in the round of sixteen.
Paul won 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 after defeating Daniil Medvedev, the reigning champion, in the round of 16.
