Brazil defeated a joint effort by Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany (BNG) to be chosen the 2027 Women’s World Cup hosts.
At Fifa’s congress in Bangkok on Friday, member associations voted 119 to 78 in favour of Brazil, making them the first country to receive the rights through an open vote.
This will be the first Women’s World Cup hosted by a nation in South America.
Gianni Infantino, the president of Fifa, congratulated Brazil.
“Brazil will host the greatest World Cup ever. I also want to thank the BNG bid, who have been outstanding.”
Both bids satisfied the hosting requirements, however according to a Fifa bid review study, Brazil received higher marks for technical features such stadiums, lodging, fan zones, and transportation.
With the announcement that they will concentrate on submitting a proposal for the tournament in 2031, the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid in April, and South Africa followed suit in November.
“We knew we would be celebrating a victory for women and for South American women’s soccer,” Brazilian Football Confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues stated.
“You can be sure, with no vanity, we will accomplish the best World Cup for women.”
The bid team from Brazil’s operations manager, Valesca Araujo, continued, saying, “We are working on a transformation, not only for the country but for the continent.”
The men’s World Cup was held in Brazil in 1950 and 2014.
The 32-team structure from the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, when Spain emerged victorious after defeating England in the championship match, will be followed in the tenth edition of the competition.
Prior competition hosts include China, Sweden, the United States, Germany, Canada, and France.
