McIlroy files for divorce in week of US PGA Championship
During the week of the US PGA Championship in Kentucky, Rory McIlroy filed for divorce from his wife Erica.
The Northern Irishman filed a “petition for dissolution of marriage” in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Monday, according to court records.
Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, their only child, was born in 2020. They got married in 2017.
The golfer’s representative acknowledged the news and emphasized that Rory wanted to make sure that this trying period was as respectful and kind as possible.
After misjudging his tee time for the Sunday singles, McIlroy credited Erica for helping him arrange a police escort to the course. The two first met in 2012 at the Ryder Cup, where Erica was working for the PGA of America.
With a few minutes to spare, McIlroy arrived at the course and defeated Keegan Bradley, pulling off the “Miracle at Medinah” as Europe overcame a 10-6 deficit to win the trophy.
The day after winning the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow for the fourth time, 35-year-old McIlroy filed for divorce.
The world number two is getting ready for the second men’s major of the year, which begins on Thursday, and has a scheduled media conference at Valhalla on Wednesday at 18:00 BST.
2014 saw him win his fourth and last major at the Louisville course.
