Wout van Aert to miss Giro dItalia through injury after heavy crash
Due to his ongoing recovery from injuries he incurred in an incident last month, Wout van Aert has decided not to participate in this year’s Giro d’Italia.
In Belgium, during the Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day race, 29-year-old Van Aert shattered numerous ribs and his collarbone. He might make a comeback in time for this summer’s Olympics in Paris, but he was supposed to make his Giro debut. Van Aert stated that his “ribs are still a limiting factor” and that “at this point I cannot train at all” in a video message. Van Aert will not compete in the Amstel Gold Race, which begins on April 14, and was forced to withdraw from the most recent Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix classics. The Visma-Lease Although a number of injuries are “quite good,” a bike racer acknowledged that it was “a big shame” to not be competing in the Giro, which gets underway on May 4.
“I’m really disappointed to miss my second big goal of the season but at this moment I need to prioritise my health and I need to give my body the time to recover,” he stated.
Nine-time stage winner of the Tour de France, Van Aert is one among the favourites to win the gold in both the 273-kilometer road race and the individual time trial at the Olympics.
Van Aert will be replaced in Visma’s Giro team by Christophe Laporte of France.
