Zhang reels in Sagstrom to win Founders Cup
Rose Zhang overtook Madelene Sagstrom with an incredible late charge to win the Cognizant Founders Cup by two strokes.
Zhang finished at the Upper Montclair County Club with a six-under 66, making four birdies in her final five holes to finish at 24 under.
Before Zhang’s late push, Sagstrom appeared to be coasting to win at the 12th hole after making her fifth birdie of the day, putting her three strokes ahead.
The 20-year-old American Zhang declared, “I’m still shaking right now, but I never gave up.” Zhang has won twice in the professional world.
“I always knew that I had something in me to just grind it out and enjoy the time against an extremely solid player.”
After almost losing out on a second LPGA Tour victory, Sweden’s Sagstrom was left fighting back tears. She later admitted that her nerves had affected her when she bogeyed the opening hole.
Her words, “It was just pure nerves,” “I have to focus on the good because I played amazing golf this week. It hurts a little bit and is awful. But my time will come.”
Gabriela Ruffels of Australia came in a very distant third on nine under.
Nelly Korda shot a one-over par 73 in her final round to finish tied for seventh on seven under, missing the opportunity to become the first player to win six straight LPGA Tour titles.
In the meantime, Charley Hull of England finished second in the Aramco Team Series held in Seoul.
Hull finished three shots behind South Korea’s Kim Hyo-joo, who won a second Ladies European Tour championship, with a final round four-under score of 68.
