Chevron Championship: Nelly Korda matches LPGA record with victory in Texas
At the Chevron Championship, Nelly Korda won her fifth straight tournament and the first women’s major of the year, matching an LPGA record.
Starting the last round, one shot behind Ryu Hae-ran was the 25-year-old American.
On a windy Texas day, she scored a three-under 69 to finish on 13 under, winning her second major by two strokes.
Annika Sorenstam (2004–05) and Nancy Lopez (1978) are the only other players who have won five straight LPGA events.
With a birdie on the final hole, world number one Korda completed his round in fine fashion and remarked, “That felt like the longest back nine of my entire life.
“The final nine holes were a little bit of a grind, but I’m glad I won.
“On the back nine, I could clearly feel the nerves getting the better of me. It’s significant. Lifting that big trophy is something I’ve always wanted since I was a tiny child.
“As I previously mentioned, I can now at last relax and savour the occasion because I was undoubtedly rather anxious. My stomach hurts so bad.”
Maja Stark of Sweden had a late charge to finish second on 11 under, while Lauren Coughlin of the United States, who recorded the lowest round of the day at four under, finished joint third on 10 under with Brooke Henderson of Canada.
Ryu came in fifth place with a round score of 74.
The English team of Lottie Woad, Charley Hull, and Georgia Hall—who took home the Augusta National Women’s Amateur earlier this month—shared a share of 23rd place at one under at the end of the round.
Stephanie Meadow of Northern Ireland was a shot farther back.
