English teen Kim ‘excited’ to make PGA Tour debut
- Stay updated on golf news: English teen Kim expresses excitement ahead of PGA Tour debut.
An even younger British golfer is getting ready to make her PGA Tour debut just two weeks after English amateur Lottie Woad made the cut in her major debut.
Kris Kim, a 16-year-old from Surrey who was instrumental in Europe’s win at the junior Ryder Cup last year, will face some of the world’s top players in Texas starting on Thursday.
The former top three players in the field at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch are Jason Day, Adam Scott, and Jordan Spieth.
Kim is considered the best adolescent prospect in English men’s golf. He won the McGregor Trophy, the European Individual Championship, and the Boys’ Amateur last year.
Under the more permissive terms of contracts for amateur athletes, he has already inked a number of sponsorship agreements. The CJ Group’s support for him has led to an invitation from a sponsor to perform this week.
Kim said, “I can’t wait to tee it up in Texas.” “It’s an incredible opportunity and what you strive for constantly.”
The teenager is Ji-Hyun Suh’s son, a former LPGA player from South Korea. Kim remarked, “I’ll ask my mom for advice.” You’re not sure how you’re going to react to the drastically altered environment.
She’ll assist me in handling it. She is my coach, and we discuss everything from course strategy to handling nerves, taking it one stroke at a time, leaving bad shots behind, and keeping things simple.
“Making the cut is my first goal; we’ll see what happens after that. There are 144 of us competing, and we all have an equal chance.
“Anything that transpires will be extremely beneficial for my future as I will acquire a great deal of experience.” Although I still consider myself to be youthful and learn something new almost every week, this week will be extremely different.
Kim began playing golf as a junior at Surrey’s Cuddington Golf Club, where he could be seen practicing nonstop after school and on weekends.
According to Paul Schunter, Cuddington’s director of golf, “I’ve never known a more dedicated youngster,” BBC Sport. “And his parents could not have been better.
They’ve been really motivating. Kris has been the one pushing everyone since he’s always wanted to play and practice more and more.
At the junior Ryder Cup in September of last year, Kim triumphed under the captaincy of DP World Tour player Stephen Gallacher. He defeated 15-year-old Miles Russell 5&4 in the singles at Marco Simone, close to Rome, earning three and a half points out of a possible four.
Russell made news of his own last week when he qualified for the Suncoast Classic in Florida, part of the Korn Ferry Tour.
Kim remarked, “I can’t wait to perform in front of large audiences again.” “At the Ryder Cup, I hit the ball farther than I’ve ever done.
The thrill of the game adds to the enjoyment of golf. Having said that, I enjoy the challenge and am looking forward to it after having played the course and a few more tour courses.
Kim and Woad are regarded by key figures at England Golf as the nation’s two best prospects. The Masters’ home course saw Woad, 20, win the most recent Augusta National Women’s Amateur by birdieing the final two holes.
An invitation to participate in the Chevron Championship at Carlton Woods in Texas earlier this month followed that success. At the midway point, Woad was ranked in the top 10, although a number of celebrities, such as France’s Celine Boutier and Ireland’s Leona Maguire, were not included.
After finishing in a share of 23rd place, Woad went back to Florida State University, where she is currently balancing her academic obligations with competitive amateur and collegiate events.
Kim, meanwhile, is preparing for his GCSEs and hoping to make his PGA Tour debut. He laughed and said, “I promise I’m trying to revise, but it’s quite tough.” “I have a very busy schedule right now.”
